Abstract  The national funds on research programs can reflect the developing trends and new directions of certain fields to some degree. After analyzing the ethnic culture projects sponsored by the National Social Science Fund from 1993 to 2008, the authors find several features of them including (1) the number of ethnic culture projects increased gradually, from 2 in 1993 to 24 in 2004, and went up to more than 30 in recent years, due to the implement of Western Programs were sponsored by National Social Sciences Fund from 2004; (2) the research themes include traditional cultural changes, development, protection and utilization, ancient ethnic culture, comparison research between two cultures, as well as the diversity of ethnic cultures; (3) it appears obvious regional characteristics. Four provinces, Yunnan, Xinjiang, Guangxi and Mongolia, obtained 46% of all ethnic culture programs, and the other provinces and cities including Gansu, Guizhou, Qinghai Ningxia, Sichuan, Hubei and Beijing had 25% of them. As we know, most of these areas are major minority nationality regions; (4) The sponsored ethnic culture programs have limitations; (5) the projects which have been finished were not exactly like the researchers promised in their papers and books on schedule and the overall quality of the researches need to be improved apparently. Therefore, the National Social Science Fund should not only function as a baton, instead it should provide more support for small and weak nationalities, encourage creative researches, help to develop the weak subjects such as culture geography and ethnic geography, but also make more efforts to strengthening international cooperation, improving Chinese academic level and practical value of Chinese ethnic culture researches under the background of globalization.
